R720xd SAS controller not always detecting SATA drives during boot up

Please, any suggestions are welcome. Even if they sound offensive. I know the simple things are missed more often than we like to admit.

I am chasing an issue with my recently purchased R720xd 3.5” intermittently not recognizing hard drives being connected (during initial boot). Results have been inconsistent, which has made it very challenging to troubleshoot.

During boot, when everything works correctly (typically when first powered on and/or cold) The Hard Drive Backplane briefly flickers all orange LED’s, then a green HDD led with flash a time or two where drives are connected at and then stay on solid. The drives can then be seen in the SAS controller BIOS

During boot, when the drives are not recognized (typically after it has been powered on for a few minutes to warm up), The orange LED’s will either not come on at all, stay on continuous, or stay on for a minute or two then go off. The SAS controller then does not list any drives in the BIOS.

The things I have done are listed below, but I still have results of it working and not working with each thing I have tried. Telling me they are not the cause.

-Swap between the OEM H710 mini and an LSI PCIe HBA

-Swapped out SAS cables

-Only connected one SAS cable at a time

-Only connecting a single HDD (2TB SATA)

-reset CMOS

-disable and enable the OEM H710 RAID controller in BIOS while connected to LSI controller

-Swap out backplane

The only consistent change I get is that it works every time when I have it out in my cold work shop (50degF currently). When the server is in room temperature, it is hit or miss if it shows any drives. I can directly connect only the rear 2.5” drive backplane with a single SAS cable and it registers drives each and every time I try. At that point, I strongly suspected this cause to be a broken solder joint on the SAS expander BGA chip on the BP, which would be effected by the temperature of air being pulled across the backplane. But replacing the backplane yesterday proved the same thing as did swapping cables and such. Still was not working each time.

I also tried to figure out what each and every cable connected to the backplane is for, so I can better understand why the issue appears to be localized to the BP. From what I can tell, the ribbon cable from the motherboard to the BP is just passing through to the left and right rack ears for VGA, power button, and indicators. The USB from the motherboard is also passing through to a rack ear. The two SAS cables go to the HBA controller, and the 3rd SAS cable just joins in the rear BP for the two 2.5” drives along with a multi conductor cable joining the rear BP to the front BP. The BP has two power cables from the motherboard.

Now what I cannot figure out on the BP connection, there is a signal cable (connection labeled “SIG”) with about 10 or 12 wires going from the motherboard to the front BP. Another identical cable goes from the motherboard to the rear BP (maybe it just jumpers through the motherboard from front BP to rear BP, but not sure why it would). I tried booting without this cable connected, but no LED’s flashed or anything on the BP and of course no drives were detected.

Please, any suggestions are welcome. Even if they sound offensive. I know the simple things are missed more often than we like to admit.

Inspiron 13 5368 2-in-1 touch screen stopped working

Hi There,

I bought Dell Inspiron 13 5368 2-in-1 a few months ago, the laptop was one of my favorite laptops ever, hence, I was using it heavily.

Sadly, the touchscreen stopped working suddenly without obvious reasons. Everything else is normal. I checked the screen or the laptop for any possible physical damage but I could not find anything. the screen is working totally fine but the touchscreen functionality is dead.

I reinstalled the device drivers without success. I have also checked the power management options and did the diagnostics.

I don't prefer to send the laptop back to dell because all my applications and files are in this laptop.

Could you help me out find the problem, its driving me nuts :/

Alienware 15 R3 issues and eventual return

Hello,

Just wanted to post a brief summary of my experience with my new Alienware 15 R3.

Issue #1: LED Screen not properly attached to bevel. This caused a small gap that allowed light to bleed at the bottom of my screen.  After hours of chatting with Dell, I met a customer support technician who showed up with a new LCD and no bevel. So issue was not fixed.  After talking to customer support, I was informed that that particular repair needs to be done at one of their facilities otherwise light will continue to bleed (should've told me that before, duh).

Issue #2: CPU overheating during normal gaming, even if I reduce to high graphics quality.  Temps on cores would reach 100, 90+, 90+, 80ish. This resulted in a exchange since apparently this is a known issue.

Issue #3: Laptop finally arrived, BUT not my original configuration.  i5 instead of i7, 1060 instead of 1070 gfx and who knows what else wasn't right.  After talking to tech support, working out 200 bucks off, I was told after another brief hold that they could not initiate the exchange order for a system with the correct specs because the screens are out of stock and they don't know when they'll get them again.

Isssue #4: My SSD is refusing to let windows do a factory image (windows somehow corrupted), after 3 hrs with tech support and no luck reloading windows, Dell is sending me a USB so I can reinstall windows and clear everything off the computer before I return it.

I tried to give them a chance since this system has the specs I wanted, but it just wasn't working out. The 200 bucks thing would've been nice.  If I had waited the "unknown" amount of time, I would no longer be eligible for a full refund and at this point, that though scares me with the experience thus far.

So today, I'll make a trip to the UPS store to return the incorrect system and I guess after I get the USB I'll return the original defective system. Yay.. and dell gets the benefit of holding on to my 2400 interest free.

Hopefully people see this before they considering purchasing from Dell. I've seen a 1% issue written quite a few times.

Dell OptiPlex 755 Floppy Drive Question

I plan to buy a floppy drive for my Dell OptiPlex 755 SFF. And while this is kind of a silly question, just to make sure, do all the floppy drives use the same cable across the whole 755 (Except for the USFF) family? And don't compain about the floppy disks being obsolete. Because they are still useful for me and I have a USB to SD card adapter if you are wanting me to get the media card bay. And I'm sure I will be able to figure out what I need, if anyone knows, what is the part number(s) for the floppy drive, cable, and bracket (For the SFF)?

Move OS from SAS RAID 1 to SATA RAID 1

Hello

I have a Dell R630 server that came with 2 300GB SAS Drives. During initial setup these were used for ESXI installation. However one of these drive is showing Predicted Failure.

Now we want to move to SSD without having to reinstall everything.

What is the easiest way to do this?

If I understand correctly, I cannot just remove the failing SAS drive and put a SATA SSD in its place since a RAID 1 cannot have mix of SAS and SSD. Or Can I?

The Raid card is H710 I believe.

How do I go about doing this without having to reinstall/reconfigure everything

Hi,

I bought a small-factor Inspiron 3050, after setting up W10 I configured an account and it's password.

Next day, I forgot the password!!!!

I naver had time to create a recovery disk. I just doanloaded the OS image from Dell.com but it does not allow me to factory reset it.

How can I use the recovery image that its on HDD??

Best Regards,

T5500 Desktop Orientation

Apparently there is a way to change my Precision T5500's drive bay orientation to a "desktop" orientation such that the optical drive is horizontal when the workstation is laid flat on a desktop. However, I've been unable to find any documentation on how to actually remove and rotate the drive bay. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

My dell latitude battery shuts down at 45% of battery power remaining and on plugging it into ac, it starts from that same % so am not sure of what is happening to it.

Alienware 17 r4 updating drivers?

$

Hi All,

Im trying to update the drivers on my new A/W 17 r4 and according to the support documentation here

http://www.dell.com/support/article/uk/en/ukdhs1/SLN128900

it says in paragraph 4 - "Under Optimize your system with drivers and updates, click either Detect Drivers on the Guide me tab, or System Analysis"

I cant see a guide me tab? or anything about detect drivers or system analysis on the 'drivers and downloads' section for my service tag.

Optimize your system with drivers and updates.

Drivers available for Service Tag 2Q19CG2

It shows me the same drivers available whether I have them installed or not, suggesting it's not checking my laptop for driver upgrades, which is making it really hard to work out if i have the right drivers installed or not.

Where is this guide me tab  with detect drivers which the support documents suggest should be there, can anyone else see them?

I would be grateful for any help because so far a week into my 1st alienware Im feeling underwhelmed and disappointed with the support site.

Service Tag cannot be found on Dell Website

The Dell website no longer recognizes my service tag or express service tag. The service tag detector fails as well.

Please advise.

When I got my Alienware aurora r5 the first thing I did was opened it up and noticed that the graphics card did not look like a normal nvidia GeForce gtx but instead it was this all black video card and I was wonder why it didn't have the normal led that light up on the side? I was really looking forward to that glowing in my case . Could someone please tell me why or  tell me if this black thing is removable to reveal the real graphics card.

Brand new Inspiron I7378 Laptop with very loud fan

Hello,

I hope that you're doing well! I've just purchased a Dell Inspiron I7378 (full model# I7378-4314GRY). It is brand new, and it just arrived in the mail today. However, I was immediately disappointed when I turned it on, just a couple hours, to begin setting it up. The fan is extremely loud and goes on and off, even though it is brand new and I don't have any programs/windows open. It sounds like a small leaf blower going on and off when the fan turns on. The laptop itself is not hot or heating up uncomfortably, and little to nothing is open (no windows open, no programs running, etc.) Yet, the fan was loud from the first moment I pressed "power" after taking it out of the box.

At this moment, for example, I started Windows updates and the fan continues to turn on as though it is working very hard, then to go off and be silent. It is very noticeable when it goes on, and reminds me of the loud fan noises my ancient laptops used to make at the end of their lifespans. When I compare it to an Inspiron 7000 series from 2015, sitting right beside it, the I7378-4314GRY is very loud while the older model is quiet and silent despite the older model having numerous browsing windows open.

Is this typical? Or is this a sign of an issue with the laptop that I should be concerned about? Is it typically a noisy model? It is really disappointing that it is so noisy even though I have just taken it out of the box. So I wanted to double check and see if there are any potential issues associated with fan noise.

Thanks so much in advance for any help or guidance!

Sincerely,

Jamie

Thinking About Payment

Well, I was thinking about purchasing one of your products on your website. I couldn't afford the full price, so I'm thinking about getting the monthly payments. According to your site, it says I need to apply for financing.

I thought I figured everything out except the state ID. When that happens, it couldn't able to get through the Dell Preferred Account. Is there a way to get around it? I don't want to pay the full price, just monthly payments.

Precision 5510 + D3100 docking station

$

I updated my working station coming from another laptop and had 2 monitors connected (in hdmi and usb->vga adapter). Autodesk 3d applications Revit, 3dsmax all worked fine in all monitors, the usb dongle was using laptop's CPU/GPU to show image.

With new laptop I got D3100 docking station (as usb->vga adapter has some flickering on 5510) to connect my monitors. But mentioned applications do not work at all on that, anything considering 3d runs awfully slow. Using the usb->vga dongle it works well beside flickering.

Is it how it supposed to be with D3100? Can it be forced to use laptop's GPU for showing image (like the cheap usb->vga/hdmi adapters)? This docking station doesn't make any sense now.
