I've been using a hand-me-down Inspiron 1150. But the light in the display failed some months ago so I've had to use it connected to a monitor on a cart next to my bed. Twisting my neck to look at the monitor is literally a pain in the neck .
I recently received a refurbished Inspiron 1100 from FreeCycleSeattle and I hoped that I could just pull the hard drive from the 1150 and pop it into the 1100, which I just tried to do this morning.
But, as is often the case with computers, it turned out to not be as easy as it seemed it would be. When I turned on the 1100 after inserting the hard drive from the 1150 I got this error message:
A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen,
restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:
Check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive contorllers. Check you hard drive to make sure it is proper configured and terminated.
Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.

I tried rebooting a couple of times, and tried to boot to safe-mode but always ended up at that same message.
So, I'm hoping that I can still get this to work by booting from a CD and then configuring the transferred hard drive. Would that work?
If so, which CD will I need? I've got a generic Dell XP Home installation CD that a friend gave me. Would that work?
