Attempt to reset the display driver and recover from timeout failed

So I've been trying all day to reinstall Windows Vista on a Dell XPS 410. Installation works for a bit but always crashes about halfway through and I get a BSOD saying "attempt to reset the display driver and recover from timeout failed". It disappears too fast for me to catch anything else. But from what I've read, I need to uninstall and reinstall the nVidia drivers. I know how to install the drivers but this always fails, possibly because I haven't uninstalled them first. So how do I go about uninstalling the drivers, either using command prompt or the installation disk? I have absolutely no way of starting Windows as no form or safe mode works, or even using last good configuration. All options lead to an alert saying "Installation cannot continue, please restart." I've also tried programs that can totally wipe the hard drive at boot but these don't work either. Can anybody help?
