The audio started cracking about a month ago only when the wireless connection was on, and lately when the laptop is hardwired too. I have reset the BIOS (Alt E, Alt F , Alt B), and the primary IDE channel is (as it was when I checked prior to BIOS reset) set to DME when available. I loathe to install SP 3 since I do not have any other issue with the laptop and my 40 GB hard drive puts a premium on disc space. Speakers are fine as the same cracking can be heard on external speakers. I have the latest drivers as per service tag.
Not sure if this is related info but there are two unknown devices (e.g., question marks) on the Device Manager:
1. Network component: PCI Bus 3, Component 3, function 0. Component Status: Driver not installed (Code: 28).
2. PCI Modem: PCI Bus 0, Component 30, function 3. Component Status: Driver not installed (Code: 28).
Trying to uninstall and reinstall the driver was unsuccessful as the driver was not found in the installed OS files. I do not have the XP installation CD.
