Hello all,
I'm currently looking at some options for upgrading the aging XPS 710 tower I have here. It was bought in June 2007.
Currently it looks like:
E6600 2.40GHz, 1066FSB, 4MB cache
3GB DDR2 RAM (upgrarded by 1GB by myself)
nVidia 9800GT 1GB (to replace the original nVidia 8800GTX 768MB which died)
300GB HDD SATA STRIPE
Motherboard: nForce4 SLI Intel Edition C1 (Southbridge nForce 570 SLI, A2). BIOS 1.4.0 (I realise this needs updated if I upgrade the CPU as below)
Windows XP Media Edition
There's 3 things I want to upgrade. One is the GPU (I haven't settled on which one yet), installing Windows 7 (I have another stick of 1GB of DDR2 RAM, so doing this will update the OS and increase the RAM) and lastly, and the one I need most help with, I want to update the CPU.
I saw a post from Chris M. It's from 2011 and I doubt much has changed. Here's the important part:
The e6500 was never tested by us. These were validated -
PU963 Presler 935, 3.2GHz, 2X2MB, 800FSB, D0
DU362 Conroe E6300, 1.86GHz, 2MB, 1066FSB, L2
DT893 Conroe E6300, 1.86GHz, 2MB, 1066FSB, B2
DX485 Conroe E6320, 1.86GHz, 4MB, 1066FSB, B2
DX483 Conroe E4400, 2.00GHz, 2MB, 800FSB, L2
KN977 Conroe E6400, 2.13GHz, 2MB, 1066FSB, B2
DU361 Conroe E6400, 2.13GHz, 2MB, 1066FSB, L2
DX484 Conroe E6420, 2.13GHz, 4MB, 1066FSB, B2
KU345 Conroe E6600, 2.4GHz, 4MB, 1066FSB, B2
PN416 Conroe E6700, 2.66GHz, 4MB, 1066FSB, B2
HU585 Kentsfield Quad Core Q6600, 2.4GHz, 8MB, 1066FSB, B3
UP673 Kentsfield Quad Core QX6700, 2.66GHz, 8MB, 1066FSB, B3
WM543 Conroe XE X6800, 2.93GHz, 4MB, 1066FSB, B2
From this list, really I'd like to go with the Q6600 or the QX6700. They are designated "B3" at the end of each line. I realise Intel revised these chips and many out there now have SLACR (which, listed in the same format as B3 would be G0) at the end of the name. Which leads me to my question: Can I install one of those SLACR (G0) CPUs? I've found plenty of Q6600 and QX6700 out there with SLACR and I dare say it'd make procuring a CPU easier (and potentially more economical!). If not, then I can rule it out and go ahead anyway.
tl;dr version: Can I install a SLACR CPU where Chris M has listed a B3 one?
Thanks for your time!
