Hello everybody,
I'm very satisfied with my Inspiron 6000 purchased in 2005 just updated with Windows XP Service Pack 3.
Lately I had to rescue it with Dell PC Restore by Symantec which restores the original factory software, because Windows wouldn't start up (while a distribution of Linux on pendrive worked fine).
The message was:
autochk program not found - skipping autocheck
winlogon.exe - File danneggiato (damaged)
il file o la directory \WINDOWS\system32\sfc_os.dll è danneggiato e non leggibile. (unreadable)
Previous error messages at boot time were:
Read failure on internal hard drive. No bootable device.
Stike F1 to retry boot
Strike F2 for setup utility
and
Loading PBR 2 failed
and
No boot device available
I also received a Blue screen error with this technical information:
*** STOP: 0X0000007E (0XC0000005,0X004AC3F8,0XF88D17E4,0XF88D14E0)
Similar failures occurred four times and I would like to prevent it from happening again.
I don't know why it happens; maybe because it's old (7 years), maybe I took it around too often (not long distances), maybe because I booted it from USB to try several Linux distributions on pendrive (supposedly not changing the hard disk content).
What I'm asking for is: would a BIOS update from versionA08 to A09 have some benefit? Is it an easy task to upgrade the BIOS ?
Any other suggestion would be appreciated.
Thank you.
