Dell 2355DN firmware failure

I purchased a brand new Dell 2355DN this week. As soon as it arrived, I downloaded the latest drivers and updates. One of the recommended updates was firmware A06. I applied that firmware from a Windows 7 64-bit machine. The firmware appeared to succeed, but when the printer automatically rebooted after the firmware update finished, it hung at the "Please wait..." screen. It would not go any further. This unit has printed only less than 20 pages in its life. The sticker on the back of the dead unit says A03, so I am assuming that means it was at firmware level 3.

I called support and they could not get it to go past that stage. They sent me a replacement unit, which appears to be a refurb due to the fact that the touch panel LCD has two large scratches on it, the exterior has some signs of prior use and the inside gears are covered in toner. While the replacement unit will boot it, it will not print without jamming saying there is a jam in the duplex path. I have tried 24, 28 and even thin 20 lb paper -- they all jam.

I have both printers still.

Anyway, I have a couple of questions:

  1. Does this printer have any sort of firmware recovery mode that I can use to try to reflash it with the new firmware or even the original firmware?
  2. Would swapping the logic boards on these units be a possible solution to bringing the brand new unit back to life since it prints without jamming?
  3. Has anyone had success requesting Dell to replace such a new device with a new replacement rather than a refurb?

Very frustrating experience so far with this unit.

Thank you,

Jason
