BIOS does not see disk

I have an Inspiron 6400 laptop which continually blue screens with Memory_management stop code 1A.  I am able to boot off a Linux CD with no problem.  The Dell diagnostics are all successful except the HDD one.  The BIOS is running A015 and A017 is the latest but I am not able to boot long enough to install that.

The old HDD shows SMART errors when loaded on another PC so I cloned it to a brand new disk.  Both are Hitachi 5400 models, the old one 120GB the new 250GB.

How can I get the BIOS to see the disk ?  I have restored the image of the old disk to the new with a disk signature and without.  Dell support claim there is no BIOS locking going on and any SATA disk will do.

Thanks.
