Dell U2913WM 29" Wide Monitor

I've got a number of users on my network who want dual-screen setups so they can have more apps open side-by-side. I currently have a dual screen setup and wouldn't want to give up the screen real estate.

For a lot of the users asking for dual monitors, they would need new display adapters that support dual monitors. That's a pain for me to have to obtain new graphics cards, crack open a bunch of old PCs and install them and then assemble the dual monitor stands and wrestle the monitors on to the stand and adjust them.

Now I just happened upon an announcement of Dell's 29" wide monitor. By my calculation, it's roughly 10% smaller, by total square inches than a pair of 20" monitors. Not bad considering you eliminate the frame gap in the middle and you only need one display adapter.

The one thing I'm unclear on is compatibility with older PCs. On the older Windows 7 and XP systems we have, the monitor is usually identified by the operating system as a Plug-And-Play device. Since we've never had a 21:9 I have no idea how the display adapters would treat a 29" wide monitor.

Anyone have experience with older display adapters working with newer wide monitors? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.
